c77cb2a09c MIPS: Make the IRIX naming of local section symbols consistent
Make the MIPS/IRIX naming of local section symbols consistent between
files produced by generic ELF code and ELF linker code, complementing
commit 174fd7f95561 ("New bfd elf hook: force naming of local section
symbols"), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2004-02/msg00072.html>.

Local section symbols have no names in the standard ELF gABI, however
the lack of a name causes problems with IRIX's MIPSpro linker. To work
around the issue we give them names, however we do that in generic ELF
code only, based on what the `elf_backend_name_local_section_symbols'
hook returns if present. That makes objects created by GAS or `objdump'
work correctly, however not ones created by `ld -r'. That would not
normally cause issues with IRIX systems using GAS and `objdump' only
with the MIPSpro linker, however if GNU LD was used for whatever reason
in producing objects later fed to IRIX's MIPSpro linker, then things
would break.

Modify ELF linker code accordingly then, using the same hook. Adjust
the `ld-elf/64ksec-r' test accordingly so that it also accepts a section
symbol with a name.

Also modify the hook itself so that only actual ET_REL objects have
names assigned to local section symbols. Other kinds of ELF files are
not ever supposed to be relocated with the MIPSpro linker, so we can
afford producing more standard output.

Add suitable GAS, LD and `objcopy' test cases to the relevant testsuites
to keep these tools consistently verified. This change also fixes:

FAIL: objcopy executable (pr25662)

across MIPS targets using the IRIX compatibility mode.

3f1b17bbf0 MIPS/LD: Set symtab's `sh_info' correctly for IRIX emulations
Correct ELF linker code so as to set the `sh_info' value of the static
symbol table section according to the section symbols vs other symbols
split where required by the selection of the IRIX compatibility mode for
MIPS target. Add a `elf_backend_elfsym_local_is_section' hook for that
purpose, returning TRUE if it is only STB_LOCAL/STT_SECTION symbols that
are to be considered local for the purpose of this split rather than all
STB_LOCAL symbols.

We do it already in generic ELF code, and have done it since 1993, with
the `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook, affecting GAS and `objcopy', so
these tools produce correct ELF output in the IRIX compatibility mode,
however if such output is fed as input to `ld -r', then the linker's
output is no longer valid for that mode. The relevant changes to
generic ELF code are:

commit 062189c6eab72c7ba1bab1cf30fdb27d67a7d668
Author: Ian Lance Taylor <ian@airs.com>
Date: Thu Nov 18 17:12:47 1993 +0000

and:

commit 6e07e54f1b347f885cc6c021c3fd912c79bdaf55
Author: Ian Lance Taylor <ian@airs.com>
Date: Thu Jan 6 20:01:42 1994 +0000

(split across two GIT commits likely due to repository conversion
peculiarities).

The `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook however operates on BFD rather than
ELF symbols, making it unsuitable for the ELF linker as the linker does
not convert any symbol tables processed into the BFD format. Converting
the hook to operate on ELF symbols would in principle be possible, but
it would still require a considerable rewrite of `bfd_elf_final_link' to
adapt to the interface.

Therefore, especially given that no new use for the IRIX compatibility
mode is expected, minimize changes made to the ELF linker code and just
add an entirely new hook, and wire it in the o32 and n32 MIPS backends
accordingly; the n64 backend never uses the IRIX compatibility mode.

Since we have no coverage here at all add suitable GAS, LD and `objcopy'
test cases to the relevant testsuites to keep these tools consistently
verified.

f16a9783c5 Add support for a MIPS specific .MIPS.xhash section.
This patch is a reimplementation of [1] which was submitted in 2015 by
Neil Schellenberger. Copyright issue was sorted out [2] last year.
It proposed a new section (.gnu.xhash) and related dynamic tag
(DT_GNU_XHASH). The new section would be virtually identical to the
existing .gnu.hash except for the translation table (xlat) which would
contain correct MIPS .dynsym indexes corresponding to the hashvals in
chains. This is because MIPS ABI imposes a different ordering on the
dynsyms than the one expected by the .gnu.hash section. Another addition
would be a leading word (ngnusyms) which would contain the number of
entries in the translation table.

In this patch, the new section name and dynamic tag are changed to
reflect the fact that the section should be treated as MIPS-specific
(.MIPS.xhash and DT_MIPS_XHASH).

This patch addresses the alignment issue as reported in [3], which is
caused by the leading word added to the .MIPS.xhash section. Leading word
is removed in this patch, and the number of entries in the translation
table is now calculated using DT_MIPS_SYMTABNO dynamic tag (this is
addressed by the corresponding glibc patch).

Suggestions on coding style in [4] were taken into account. Existing
GNU hash testcase was covered, and another one was added in the MIPS
part of the testsuite.

The other major change is reserving MIPS ABI version 5 for .MIPS.xhash,
marking the need of support for .MIPS.xhash in the dynamic linker (again,
addressed in the corresponding glibc patch). This is something which I
am not sure of, especially after reading [5]. I am confused on whether
this ABI version is reserved for IFUNC, or it can be used for this
purpose.

Already mentioned glibc patch is submitted at:

3c7687b9cd MIPS/LD: Accept high-part relocations in PIC code with absolute symbols
Accept R_MIPS_HI16, R_MIPS_HIGHER and R_MIPS_HIGHEST relocations and
their compressed counterparts in PIC code where the symbol referred is
absolute. Such an operation is meaningful, because an absolute symbol
effectively is a constant the calculation of the value of which has been
deferred to the static link time, and which is not going to change any
further at the dynamic load time. Therefore there is no need ever to
refuse the use of these relocations with such symbols, as the resulting
run-time value observed by the program will be correct even in PIC code.

This is not the case with R_MIPS_26 and its compressed counterparts,
because the run-time value calculated by the instructions these
relocations are used with depends on the address of the instruction
itself, and that can change according to the base address used by the
dynamic loader. Therefore these relocations have to continue being
rejected in PIC code even with absolute symbols.

This allows successful linking of code that relies on previous linker
behavior up to commit 861fb55ab50a ("Defer allocation of R_MIPS_REL32
GOT slots"), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2008-08/msg00096.html>,

982d0151e9 PR ld/21375: MIPS: Add test cases for undefined weaks resolving to zero
Define a new procedure, `run_mips_undefweak_test', and use it to iterate
over several scenarios involving undefined weak symbols resolving to
zero, verifying expected regular MIPS, MIPS16 and microMIPS code, GOT
and dynamic symbol table generation, as well as the setting of the
EI_ABIVERSION field in the ELF file header. In particular ensure that
symbol versioning works and that `__gnu_absolute_zero' gets assigned a
version (any will do) even if it has not been listed for exportation in
a linker version script.

78da84f994 MIPS/LD/testsuite: Correct mips-elf.exp test ABI/emul/endian arrangement
Similarly to commit 86b24e15c45b ("MIPS/LD/testsuite: Correct
comm-data.exp test ABI/emul/endian arrangement") update the mips-elf.exp
test script to:

- correctly select emulations for targets using non-traditional MIPS
  emulations,

- correctly select ABIs for targets that do not support all of them,

- use the default endianness selection where possible to benefit targets
  that support only one,

- simplify test invocation by providing ABI-specific `run_dump_test'
  wrappers, specifically `run_dump_test_o32', `run_dump_test_n32',
`run_dump_test_n64' and `run_dump_test_eabi', which remove the need to
use conditionals across the Expect script or to repeat ABI-specific
GAS and LD flags with each invocation,

removing numerous test failures for `mips-sgi-irix6', `mips64-openbsd',
`mips64el-openbsd' and `mips64el-ps2-elf' targets and broadening
coverage for several MIPS targets.

There are some new failures for the `mips64el-ps2-elf' target with tests
that were not previously run for that target:

FAIL: MIPS16 link branch to absolute expression (n32)
FAIL: MIPS16 link branch to absolute expression 1 (n32)
FAIL: MIPS16 link branch to absolute expression 2 (n32)
FAIL: microMIPS link branch to absolute expression (n32)
FAIL: MIPS ELF got reloc n32
FAIL: MIPS ELF xgot reloc n32
FAIL: undefined weak symbol overflow (n32)
FAIL: R_MIPS16_HI16 and R_MIPS16_LO16 relocs n32
FAIL: ld-mips-elf/attr-gnu-4-0-n32-ph
FAIL: ld-mips-elf/attr-gnu-4-1-n32-ph
FAIL: ld-mips-elf/attr-gnu-4-2-n32-ph
FAIL: ld-mips-elf/attr-gnu-4-3-n32-ph
FAIL: MIPSr6 JALR reloc unaligned/cross-mode link test (n32)

which are mostly due to dump discrepancies caused by mapping differences
coming from the default linker scripts used by these test cases, or
sometimes because of the specific MIPS processor architecture recorded
in the ELF file taking precedence over the general MIPS ISA level also
recorded. Finally, the R_MIPS16_HI16/R_MIPS16_LO16 relocation test
failure is a preexisting issue with the IRIX style emulation.

These failures will have to be addressed separately.

9143e72c6d PR ld/22570: MIPS/BFD: Fix TLS relocation resolution for PIE executables
Correct a commit 0e1862bb401f ("Add output_type to bfd_link_info") issue
and use `bfd_link_dll' rather than `bfd_link_pic' in determining whether
to fully resolve GD, LD and IE TLS relocations referring to symbols
locally defined rather than deferring them to the load time by means of
dynamic relocations.

Such symbols cannot be preempted in PIE executables, which are
necessarily PIC, and therefore their values (thread pointer offsets) are
fixed at the static link time as is the associated module ID of the main
executable.

Given the `tlsbin-o32.s' and `tlsdyn-o32.s' sources from our test suite
this removes the absolute TLS relocations from the static:

and the dynamic:

PIE executable respectively, as reported by `objdump -R', and fills the
corresponding GOT slots with the values expected, as recorded with the
test cases added. The new output from `objdump -R' is:

DYNAMIC RELOCATION RECORDS (none)

and:

4b8377e7db MIPS/BFD: Do not redirect to discarded lazy binding stubs
Correct a MIPS/BFD linker issue with dynamic symbol and corresponding
GOT entry values being redirected to lazy binding stubs where the stubs
section has been discarded by assigning to the `/DISCARD/' output
section in the linker script used. The issue manifests itself by the
values entered being relative to the absolute section, which is what any
discarded sections are internally assigned in the linker.

For the `stub-dynsym-2.s' piece of code included as a test case with
this change this issue results in the dynamic symbol table and the GOT
looking like:

Symbol table '.dynsym' contains 3 entries:

if assembled to regular MIPS code, or:

if assembled to microMIPS code. Symbol values and GOT entries record
the offset into the inexistent stubs section and the ISA bit rather than
zero, which would be the case if a lazy binding stub was not used for
other reasons, such as the value of the symbol being taken for a purpose
other than making a function call (e.g. an R_MIPS_GOT16 relocation).

789ff5b6c2 PR ld/22966: Fix n64 MIPS `.got.plt' range checks
The addressable signed 32-bit range for n64 MIPS `.got.plt' references
is from 0xffffffff7fff8000 to 0x7fff7fff, due to how the composition of
an LUI and an LD instruction works for address calculation in the 64-bit
addressing mode, such as when CP0.Status.UX=1.

We currently have a range check in `mips_finish_exec_plt', however it is
not correct as it verifies that the `.got.plt' start address referred is
between 0xffffffff80000000 and 0x7fffffff. It is also implemented as an
assertion rather than a proper error message despite that the situation
can be triggered by user input. Additionally there is no check made for
individual `.got.plt' entries referred even though they can be out of
range while the `.got.plt' start address is not.

Fix all these problems and use the correct range for the check, limiting
it to n64 output files, and then issue a proper error message both in
`mips_finish_exec_plt' and in `_bfd_mips_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol',
suggesting the use of the `-Ttext-segment=...' option that will often

3be08ea472 BFD: Prevent writing the MIPS _gp_disp symbol into symbol tables
The _gp_disp is a magic symbol, always implicitly defined by the linker.
It does not make a sense to write it into symbol tables for output files.
Moreover, now if the linker gets a version script, the _gp_disp symbol
gets zero version definition index. The zero index means[1]:

"The symbol is local, not available outside the object."

But the _gp_disp symbol has GLOBAL binding. That confuses some tools
like for example the LLD linker when they get such files as inputs.

This patch fixes the problem - it prevents writing the _gp_disp symbol
in regular and dynamic symbol tables.

This was tested by running LD test suite on a mipsel-linux board.

6798f8bfa6 MIPS/BFD: Fix the size of .reginfo' and .MIPS.abiflags' sections
Use the SEC_FIXED_SIZE flag to actually fix the size of `.reginfo' and
`.MIPS.abiflags' sections in `_bfd_mips_elf_always_size_sections', as
originally intended, removing link failures such as:

ld: final link failed: Section has no contents

or:

ld: final link failed: Bad value

or:

ld: foo: .reginfo section size should be 24 bytes, actual size is 32

and assertion failures like:

ld: BFD (GNU Binutils) 2.30.51.20180131 assertion fail .../bfd/elfxx-mips.c:14322

in link scenarios involving a linker script that either creates an
output `.reginfo' or `.MIPS.abiflags' section from scratch or produces
either section from different sections. If such an output section's
size turns out to be incorrect according to the psABI, then the section
is either truncated or padded out to the correct size, as relevant.

This allows people to handle these sections in a link in an unusual way,
while still addressing the issue covered by commit 58807c48a5a3
("_bfd_mips_elf_final_link: Notify user about wrong .reginfo size").

The original arrangement, coming from an unindentified change made to
what was called `mips_elf_always_size_sections' back then, between
commit 02650bd0a97e ("This adds ABI flags to MIPS/ELF object files.")
and commit 252b5132c753 ("19990502 sourceware import"), also missing
from BFD ChangeLog files, assumed that the output section size is not
going to change after return from `bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections', the
caller of that function, called in turn from `ldemul_before_allocation'
via `gld${EMULATION_NAME}_before_allocation' in ld/emultempl/elf32.em,
and ultimately from `lang_process'. This is because later on in
`lang_process' processing `lang_size_sections' is called , happily
recalculating the section size, and it has actually already been the
case at the time of commit 252b5132c753 ("19990502 sourceware import"),
so the assumption was clearly incorrect right from the beginning.

e54cb31aa3 MIPS/LD: Fix a segfault from ELF `e_flags' access with non-ELF output BFD
Fix a commit 861fb55ab50a ("Defer allocation of R_MIPS_REL32 GOT
slots"), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2008-08/msg00096.html>,
regression and a more recent:

FAIL: ld-unique/pr21529

new LD test case failure, observed with all the relevant MIPS targets
whenever the linker is invoked with one or more ELF inputs and the
output format set to `binary'.

The culprit is a segmentation fault caused in `mips_before_allocation'
by a null pointer dereference, where an attempt is made to access the
ELF file header's `e_flags' member, for the purpose of determining
whether to produce a PLT and copy relocations, without first checking
that the output BFD is ELF. The `e_flags' member is stored in BFD's
private data pointed to by `tdep', which in the case of the `binary' BFD
is null, causing the segmentation fault. With other non-ELF BFDs such
as SREC `tdep' is not null and consequently no crash may happen and in
that case random data will be interpreted as it was `e_flags'.

Disable the access to `e_flags' then and all the associated checks and
consequently never produce a PLT and copy relocations if output is not a
MIPS ELF BFD, matching `_bfd_mips_elf_merge_private_bfd_data' that does
not process `e_flags' in that case either and therefore does not let us
decide here anyway if all the input objects included in the link are
suitable for use with a PLT and copy relocations.

9f00292e69 MIPS/GAS: Use non-zero frag offset directly in PIC branch relaxation
Use frag symbols with a non-zero offset directly in `fix_new_exp' calls
made in PIC branch relaxation. There is no need here to make a helper
symbol to hold the result of a `symbol+offset' calculation requested as
only branches to local symbols are relaxed and in this case the LO16
part of the PIC address load sequence will have the offset accounted for
in calculation against the local GOT entry retrieved as the GOT16 high
part. Consequently actual code produed is identical whether a helper
symbol is used or the original `symbol+offset' expression used directly.
Verify that this is indeed the case with GAS and LD tests.

b417536f23 MIPS/BFD: Consistently mark the LSI CW4010 as a MIPS II processor
Make BFD agree with GAS and mark the LSI MiniRISC CW4010 processor core

Available documentation[1][2] clearly indicates the LSI CW4010 processor

latter's 32-bit instructions are concerned and consequently can only be
considered a MIPS II ISA implementation (with vendor extensions).

This fixes an LD testsuite failure:

triggered for the `mips-sgi-irix5' and `mips-sgi-irix6' targets.

8507b6e797 MIPS16/GAS: Relax 32-bit non-PIC PC-relative synthetic instructions
Implement the relaxation of MIPS16 PC-relative synthetic LA, DLA, LW and
LD instructions to an equivalent sequence of instructions produced where
the address operand requested is out of range, absolute or requires
linker relocation, for ABIs that use 32-bit addressing and non-PIC code.

The sequence generated uses the register specified for the destination
operand as a temporary and begins with LI to load the high 16-bit part
of the address, then continues with SLL by 16 bits to move that part
into place and finally completes with a suitable operation corresponding
to the synthetic instruction used, one of: 2-argument ADDIU, 2-argument
DADDIU, absolute LW, and absolute LD respectively, providing the low
16-bit part of the address. All instructions use the extended encoding.
As a special exception accept absolute addresses for relaxation even in
PIC code.

For example:

	la	$2, 0x12345678

produces code as:

	li	$2, 0x1234
	sll	$2, $2, 16
	addiu	$2, 0x5678

would.

Where linker relocation is required emit an R_MIPS16_HI16 relocation on
the initial LI instruction and an R_MIPS16_LO16 relocation on the final
operation.

For example (where `foo' is not local):

	lw	$3, foo

produces code as:

	li	$3, %hi(foo)
	sll	$3, $3, 16
	lw	$3, %lo(foo)($3)

would.

Emit assembly warnings as appropriate where this new relaxation triggers
in the `nomacro' mode or for an instruction manually placed in a branch
delay slot in the `noreorder' mode. Refrain from relaxation where an
explicit instruction size suffix has been used and in the `noautoextend'
mode.

82d808edbc MIPS16/GAS: Fix absolute references with PC-relative synthetic instructions
Complement commit 88a7ef168927 ("MIPS16/GAS: Restore unsupported
relocation diagnostics") and also propagate constant expressions, either
already reduced from absolute symbol references or created from literals
in the first place, used as a PC-relative operand with the MIPS16 LA,
LW, DLA and LD synthetic instructions to relaxation, matching the way
forward absolute symbol references have been handled as from the commit
referred and letting relaxation produce any necessary relocations, if
possible, for the absolute value requested to be reproduced at the run
time.

Call `symbol_append' for any expression symbol created for the purpose
of MIPS16 relaxation as with constant expressions now propagated from
earlier on such symbols may make it through and have R_MIPS16_PC16_S1
relocations emitted against, and therefore need to appear in the symbol
table produced.

c1556ecd78 MIPS/BFD: Discard ineligible JALR relocations right away
Discard R_MIPS_JALR and R_MICROMIPS_JALR relocations associated with
jumps that cannot be converted to an equivalent branch right away in
`mips_elf_calculate_relocation' rather than letting them through to
`mips_elf_perform_relocation'. This includes cross-mode jumps which
need to flip the ISA bit or jumps to a misaligned location that cannot
be encoded with a branch, in addition to preemptible symbol references
already handled.

Cross-mode jumps are actually already rejected as the conversion is made
in `mips_elf_perform_relocation', so in this case this change only saves
some processing. Jumps to a misaligned location are however converted,
with bits causing misalignment lost, making resulting code functionally
different even if the lone effect is avoiding an address error exception
with an instruction fetch at the jump destination requested.

Add test cases suitable, also including GAS verification to confirm that
the JALR relocations explicitly requested have indeed been output in the
intermediate objects used.

9e009953a5 PR gas/20649: MIPS: Fix GOT16/LO16 reloc pairing with comdat sections
Correct a regression from commit 8614eeee67f9 ("Traditional MIPS
patches"), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2000-07/msg00018.html>,
which caused symbols in linkonce or what is these days known as comdat
sections to be treated as external for the purpose of PIC relocation
generation even if their binding remains STB_LOCAL. This in turn
disabled GOT16/LO16 relocation pairing with references to such symbols,
as no complementing LO16 relocation is expected for external GOT16
references in the o32 ABI, which ultimately leads to link errors, e.g.:

ld: comdat-reloc.o: Can't find matching LO16 reloc against `foo' for R_MIPS_GOT16 at 0x24 in section `.text.bar[bar]'

as with the LD test case included with this change.

Revert the special case for symbols in comdat sections then, making code
actually match `adjust_reloc_syms' as indicated in its explanatory
comment, and adjust calling code accordingly. Also bring back the
corresponding description of what now is `s_is_linkonce', lost with
commit 5f0fe04bc550 ("Improved MIPS16/MIPS32 code intermixing for
gas."), <https://www.sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2006-07/msg00039.html>.

9d862524f6 MIPS: Verify the ISA mode and alignment of branch and jump targets
Verify that the ISA mode of branch targets is the same as the referring
relocation, so that an attempt to produce a branch between instructions
encoded in different ISA modes each causes an error rather than silently
producing non-functional code. Make sure that no symbol or addend bits
are silently truncated: terminate with an error if the relocation value
calculated cannot be encoded in the relocatable field of a branch; for
REL targets also applying to any intermediate addend.

Also make jump target's alignment verification consistent with that for
branches.

This change will require an update to some obscure handcoded assembly
sources which make branches to labels placed at data objects, however
for microMIPS code only. These labels will have to be updated with the
`.insn' directive for containing code to assemble and link successfully.
Such code is broken as any such labels have always been required by the
microMIPS architecture specification[1][2] to be annotated this way for
correct interpretation, and with our old code missing `.insn' directives
caused labels to present different semantics depending on whether they
were referred with branch (ISA bit ignored) or other relocations (ISA
bit respected).

Enforcing these checks however will ensure errors in building software,
like mixed regular MIPS and microMIPS code links with branches between,
will be diagnosed at the build time rather than causing odd run-time
errors such as intermittent crashes. It will also let cross-mode BAL
instructions be converted to JALX instructions, with a separate change.

b416ba9b50 MIPS/GAS: Don't convert PC-relative REL relocs against absolute symbols
Don't convert PC-relative REL relocations against absolute symbols to
section-relative references and retain the original symbol reference
instead. Offsets into the absolute section may overflow the limited
range of their in-place addend field, causing an assembly error, e.g.:

$ cat test.s
	.text
	.globl	foo
	.ent	foo
foo:
	b	bar
	.end	foo

	.set	bar, 0x12345678
$ as -EB -32 -o test.o test.s
test.s: Assembler messages:
test.s:3: Error: relocation overflow
$

With the original reference retained the source can now be assembled and
linked successfully:

$ as -EB -32 -o test.o test.s
$ objdump -dr test.o

test.o: file format elf32-tradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	1000ffff b	0 <foo>
			0: R_MIPS_PC16	bar
   4:	00000000 nop
	...
$ ld -melf32btsmip -Ttext 0x12340000 -e foo -o test test.o
$ objdump -dr test

test: file format elf32-tradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

12340000 <foo>:
12340000:	1000159d b	12345678 <bar>
12340004:	00000000 nop
	...
$

For simplicity always retain the original symbol reference, even if it
would indeed fit.

Making TC_FORCE_RELOCATION_ABS separate from TC_FORCE_RELOCATION causes
R_MICROMIPS_PC7_S1, R_MICROMIPS_PC10_S1 and R_MICROMIPS_PC16_S1 branch
relocations against absolute symbols to be converted on RELA targets to
section-relative references. This is an intended effect of this change.
Absolute symbols carry no ISA annotation in their `st_other' field and
their value is not going to change with linker relaxation, so it is safe
to discard the original reference and keep the calculated final symbol
value only in the relocation's addend.

Similarly R6 R_MIPS_PCHI16 and R_MIPS_PCLO16 relocations referring
absolute symbols can be safely converted even on REL targets, as there
the in-place addend of these relocations covers the entire 32-bit
address space so it can hold the calculated final symbol value, and
likewise the value referred won't be affected by any linker relaxation.

Add a set of suitable test cases and enable REL linker tests which now
work and were previously used as dump patterns for RELA tests only.

96e9ba5fbb MIPS/GAS: Keep the ISA bit in the addend of branch relocations
Correct a problem with the ISA bit being stripped from the addend of
compressed branch relocations, affecting RELA targets. It has been
there since microMIPS support has been added, with:

commit df58fc944dbc6d5efd8d3826241b64b6af22f447
Author: Richard Sandiford <rdsandiford@googlemail.com>
Date: Sun Jul 24 14:20:15 2011 +0000

<https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2011-07/msg00198.html>, ("MIPS:
microMIPS ASE support") and R_MICROMIPS_PC7_S1, R_MICROMIPS_PC10_S1 and
R_MICROMIPS_PC16_S1 relocations originally affected, and the
R_MIPS16_PC16_S1 relocation recently added with commit c9775dde3277
("MIPS16: Add R_MIPS16_PC16_S1 branch relocation support") actually
triggering a linker error, due to its heightened processing strictness
level:

$ cat test.s
	.text
	.set	mips16
foo:
	b	bar

	.set	bar, 0x1235
	.align	4, 0
$ as -EB -n32 -o test.o test.s
$ objdump -dr test.o

test.o: file format elf32-ntradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	f000 1000 b	4 <foo+0x4>
			0: R_MIPS16_PC16_S1	*ABS*+0x1230
	...
$ ld -melf32btsmipn32 -Ttext 0 -e 0 -o test test.o
test.o: In function `foo':
(.text+0x0): Branch to a non-instruction-aligned address
$

This is because the ISA bit of the branch target does not match the ISA
bit of the referring branch, hardwired to 1 of course.

Retain the ISA bit then, so that the linker knows this is really MIPS16
code referred:

$ objdump -dr fixed.o

fixed.o: file format elf32-ntradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	f000 1000 b	4 <foo+0x4>
			0: R_MIPS16_PC16_S1	*ABS*+0x1231
	...
$ ld -melf32btsmipn32 -Ttext 0 -e 0 -o fixed fixed.o
$

Add a set of MIPS16 tests to cover the relevant cases, excluding linker
tests though which would overflow the in-place addend on REL targets and
use them as dump patterns for RELA targets only.

0c11728627 BFD: Let targets handle relocations against absolute symbols
Fix a generic BFD issue with relocations against absolute symbols, which
are installed without using any individual relocation handler provided
by the backend. This causes any absolute section's addend to be lost on
REL targets such as o32 MIPS, and also relocation-specific calculation
adjustments are not made.

As an example assembling this program:

$ cat test.s
	.text
foo:
	b	bar
	b	baz

	.set	bar, 0x1234
$ as -EB -32 -o test-o32.o test.s
$ as -EB -n32 -o test-n32.o test.s

produces this binary code:

$ objdump -dr test-o32.o test-n32.o

test-o32.o: file format elf32-tradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	10000000 b	4 <foo+0x4>
			0: R_MIPS_PC16	*ABS*
   4:	00000000 nop
   8:	1000ffff b	8 <foo+0x8>
			8: R_MIPS_PC16	baz
   c:	00000000 nop

test-n32.o: file format elf32-ntradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	10000000 b	4 <foo+0x4>
			0: R_MIPS_PC16	*ABS*+0x1230
   4:	00000000 nop
   8:	10000000 b	c <foo+0xc>
			8: R_MIPS_PC16	baz-0x4
   c:	00000000 nop
$

where it is clearly visible in `test-o32.o', which uses REL relocations,
that the absolute section's addend equivalent to the value of `bar' -- a
reference to which cannot be fully resolved at the assembly time,
because the reference is PC-relative -- has been lost, as has been the
relocation-specific adjustment of -4, required to take into account the
PC+4-relative calculation made by hardware with branches and seen in the
external symbol reference to `baz' as the `ffff' addend encoded in the
instruction word. In `test-n32.o', which uses RELA relocations, the
absolute section's addend has been correctly retained.

Give precedence then in `bfd_perform_relocation' and
`bfd_install_relocation' to any individual relocation handler the
backend selected may have provided, while still resorting to the generic
calculation otherwise. This retains the semantics which we've had since
forever or before the beginning of our repository history, and is at the
very least compatible with `bfd_elf_generic_reloc' being used as the
handler.

Retain the `bfd_is_und_section' check unchanged at the beginning of
`bfd_perform_relocation' since this does not affect the semantics of the
function. The check returns the same `bfd_reloc_undefined' code the
check for a null `howto' does, so swapping the two does not matter.
Also the check is is mutually exclusive with the `bfd_is_abs_section'
check, since a section cannot be absolute and undefined both at once, so
swapping the two does not matter either.

With this change applied the program quoted above now has the in-place
addend correctly calculated and installed in the field being relocated:

$ objdump -dr fixed-o32.o

fixed-o32.o: file format elf32-tradbigmips

Disassembly of section .text:

00000000 <foo>:
   0:	1000048c b	1234 <bar>
			0: R_MIPS_PC16	*ABS*
   4:	00000000 nop
   8:	1000ffff b	8 <foo+0x8>
			8: R_MIPS_PC16	baz
   c:	00000000 nop
$

Add a set of MIPS tests to cover the relevant cases, including absolute
symbols with addends, and verifying that PC-relative relocations against
symbols concerned resolve to the same value in the final link regardless
of whether the REL or the RELA relocation form is used. Exclude linker
tests though which would overflow the in-place addend on REL targets and
use them as dump patterns for RELA targets only.
